Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate dry eye-related ocular symptoms by conducting a questionnaire survey among university students to evaluate the relationship between dry eye symptoms and daily life.
Methods: Of the university students who responded to the online survey from March to April 2022, 126 were included. The subjects were divided into a dry eye disease group (DED) and a non-DED group based on whether they had ever been diagnosed with DED by a doctor. The Dry Eye-Related Quality-of-Life Score (DEQS) Korean questionnaire was used to investigate dry eye-related ocular symptoms and daily life discomfort using 6 and 9 items, respectively.
Results: Of the 126 respondents, 15 (11.9%) had DED and 111 (88.1%) were in the non-DED group. Students with ocular fatigue, dryness, and foreign body sensation were statistically significantly higher in the DED group than in the non-DED group. The total scores for ocular symptom items were 10.07¡¾4.65 and 6.66¡¾5.06 in the two groups, respectively (p=0.016). The total scores for discomfort in daily life were 6.07¡¾5.06 points and 3.15¡¾5.00 points in the DED and non-DED groups (p=0.037), respectively. Both the DED and non-DED groups showed a high correlation between the symptoms of dry eye symptoms and discomfort in daily life, with r=0.642 and r=0.679 (p<0.001), respectively.
Conclusions: The DED group showed a greater correlation between dry eye-related ocular symptoms and daily life than the non-DED group, while dry eye symptoms showed a high positive correlation with discomfort in daily life.
